Electronic Logging Devices – Ensuring the Safety of the Drivers on Roads

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration   or FMCSA have implemented the new ELD rules to regulate the drive time as well as the resting periods of the commercial drivers on the roads of the USA. The aim of this implementation is to reduce the rate of road accidents caused due to fatigue and distraction of the truck drivers. Before ELD was implemented; FMCSA noticed that most of the truck accidents were caused because of the fatigue of the truck drivers because they do not follow any fixed Hours of Service or HOS. Though there was an electronic onboard recorder or EOBR, it was not mandatory to have the device installed on the trucks to track the HOS of the drivers. Hence, sometimes the truck drivers cannot calculate their HOS rightly and often ditch the regulated HOS which lead them rough and risky driving.
